New Nidderdale Explorer Scout Unit spreads its wings
This September saw the launch of Falcon Scott ESU (The Falcons), giving local teens a brand-new opportunity to start or continue their Scouting journey beyond the age of 14.

The unit, for teens aged (14-17) was created due to demand and provides young people with place to keep exploring the world around them, master new skills and having fun.
And what a start they’ve had! With a number of enthusiastic explorers and a dedicated volunteer team already on board, the unit is buzzing with energy. The Falcons have already tackled night hikes, laser tag, and assisted with running escape-and-evade challenge for the younger Scout section.
They’ve even embarked on their first camp which was a mix of culture and adventure as they explored the historic sights of York and headed back to basics sleeping in tarp shelters and hammocks under the starts!
And that’s not all! Before the official launch, the Explorers joined the younger Scouts for an unforgettable trip to Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland. From mountain hikes and high ropes to glacial lake swims, they trip gave then a true taste of international scouting spirit.
One of the Explorers said: “At Explorers, I get to go on adventures and do things that I otherwise wouldn’t get to do. I especially like being outdoors with my friends and we have a laugh together.”
And its just as rewarding for adult volunteers. One leader at the unit said: “I wanted to put something back as my child has gained a lot from beavers, cubs and scouts. It seemed a shame that there was no local next step. Hopefully I can bring some new skills to the explorers.”
And there are plenty more skills to gain and unmissable experiences in the works for the rest of 2025 and beyond!
